Another Look at the Syntax of Hungarian Verbal Particles

چکیده

The Hungarian verbal particle, this tiny function (grammatical) word causes a lot of headache to linguists to this day. One of the most difficult questions refers to its structural position. The most recent syntactic analysis (É. Kiss 2006, 2008) assumes that the Hungarian verbal particle is inserted in postverbal argument (complement) position because its role is similar to that of the resultative phrases, i.e. sublative case-marked NPs. This approach however, fails to explain sentences containing both verbal particles and case-marked NPs, which is a significant failure. For that very reason I argue against inserting the verbal particle in the abovementioned position and present an alternative syntactic analysis which is able to account for sentences containing verbal particle and NPCase.

Hungarian focus is not exhausted

This observation has lead to the more general distinction between identificational focus which is moved from its initial argument position and exhaustive and information focus which appears in its argumenta position and is not (necessarily) exhaustive (É. Kiss 1998). E.g. English it-clefts have been argued to be instances of identificational focus while prosodic focus in English is thought of a...

Prosodic (non-)realisation of broad, narrow and contrastive focus in Hungarian: a production and a perception study

In languages with variable focus positions, prominent elements tend to be emphasised by prosodic cues (e.g. English). If a language prefers a given prosodic pattern, i.e. sentence-final nuclear accents, like Spanish, the prosodic realisation of broad focus might not differ from that of narrow and contrastive focus. The relevance of prosodic focus marking was tested in Hungarian were focus typic...

Language deficits in pre-symptomatic Huntington's disease: evidence from Hungarian.

A limited number of studies have investigated language in Huntington's disease (HD). These have generally reported abnormalities in rule-governed (grammatical) aspects of language, in both syntax and morphology. Several studies of verbal inflectional morphology in English and French have reported evidence of over-active rule processing, such as over-suffixation errors (e.g., walkeded) and over-...
